Prompted by an article in the Guardian by George Monbiot, and by Vaughan Roderick's blog, I thought this would be a good time to look in detail at how we can improve Wales' rail network.

This is something I've commented on before in the WalesOnline forums, and I'm about half way through looking at things in greater detail. More on that in the next post. But to start with, here are links to what George Monbiot has written:

New High Speed Connections

There will be a lot of news today regarding the development of Heathow Airport's third runway, but buried in the detail is a proposal to build a new railway station on the Great Western Main Line, conceptually called Heathrow Hub ( but I suspect that Heathrow Parkway my be its eventual name), which would be linked directly to the various Heathrow terminals by a local metro system.

This would be immediately benefical to Welsh rail travellers (or at least those in the South) by providing ...

Trish Law and Dai Davies of Blaenau Gwent People's voice have recently said that they want all public transport in Wales to be free.

ALL public transport in Wales should be free and publicly-owned to face up to the “staggering challenges” of climate change, according to two Independent politicians.

Dai Davies and Trish Law, the MP and AM for Blaenau Gwent, insist their plan of free transport for all is no pipe dream, but costed and achievable. They set out their strategy in a submission ...

I have very mixed feelings about this:

1. Burning coal is the most environmentally damaging way of generating electricity; one we should be phasing out, rather than expanding. For the people of the area around East Pit, there will be even ...

There's some very welcome news today about the completion of a new fibre optic "backbone" across N Wales.

The scheme has seen 200 miles of optic fibre cable laid from Holyhead on Anglesey to Manchester. The £30m FibreSpeed initiative connects business parks and industrial estates between Caernarfon and Wrexham directly into the UK's main broadband link.

The project is planned as the first phase of long-term assembly government plans to make high speed data services available ...
