Credit Unions - business finance

I am currently researching opinion and background information on credit unions. How are they faring in Wales? Are they using an appropriate model for a modern age. Can they be developed or do we need to start again from scratch?
These are some of the many questions that I am asking.
Why am I doing this? Because I believe that the Welsh economy can only improve if a proper financial/banking platform is adopted that is 'locality' based and relevant to business.
We intend to study the recent Irish experience and also the US. This forum seems an ideal place to generate a dialogue on this topic. We see this as a way of showing that Plaid Cymru is sensitive to and aware of the importance of a sustainable and healthy business and financial economy before any other of its aspirations of nationalism and social change can be achieved.
I look forward to your assistance with this.
